Crónicas del Viento es un tomo autoconclusivo realizado por el aclamado autor Jiro Taniguchi. Se centra en la vida del samurai Jubei Yagyu. En Japón, en 1649, el antiguo Emperador Gomino idea un plan para acabar con el shogunato de los Tokugaka y retornar el gobierno de la isla. La base de este plan es robar el pergamino delas Crónicas Secretas de los Yagyu, un escrito que contiene antiguos secretos del shogunato que podrían llevarlo a su fin. Es tras el robo que Jubei Yagyu, maestro espadachín perteneciente al leal clan de los Yagyu y por tanto protector del escrito, debe ir tras el ladrón y recuperar el pergamino antes de que el país vuelva a caer en una sangrienta guerra civil.

Un nuovo appuntamento con Jiro Taniguchi che, in collaborazione con lo scrittore Kan Furuyama, ci porta nel 1649 in pieno medioevo giapponese. In quegli anni all’imperatore erano stati tolti tutti i poteri politici (gli era rimasto solo quello religioso). A guidare la nazione era lo shogun, massima carica di un governo controllato dalla potente famiglia Tokugawa. La storia di questo manga ci mostra l’imperatore, frustrato dalla sua condizione, che tenta di riconquistare il proprio potere. Non potendo agire direttamente (i Tokugawa erano troppo forti e l’avrebbero sconfitto senza problemi), organizza un complotto per rubare un libro sacro allo shogunato, “il libro del vento”: la scomparsa di questo prezioso simbolo di potere genererà il panico nel governo creando uno spiraglio per il suo ritorno. Jubei Yagyu è il samurai preposto al ruolo di guardiano del prezioso manoscritto: quando si rende conto del furto, l’unica cosa che può fare è cercare il ladro. Ma deve trovarlo in fretta, altrimenti in Giappone potrebbero scoppiare nuove guerre per il controllo del potere.
