Aizen ist ein sehr intellektueller Shinigami und erscheint als sanftmütige und gewissenhafte Person. So ist er bei allen Shinigamis der Gotei 13 sehr beliebt, insbesondere seine Vizekommandantin Momo Hinamori scheint sehr viel mehr für ihn zu empfinden und bewundert ihn seit Jahren, da er ihr besonders viel Zuneigung und Aufmerksamkeit schenkt.

Aizen verbirgt jedoch etwas: Er versucht seit ca. 110 Jahren mithilfe von Kaname Tousen und Gin Ichimaru einen verräterischen Plan gegen die Gotei 13 auszuführen, dessen Ziel es ist die Ketten des Shinigami-Dasein hinter sich zu lassen und neue Dimensionen der Stärke zu erreichen. Um das zu erreichen ist ihm jedes Mittel recht, so dass er auch nicht davor zurück schreckt über diverse Leichen zu gehen.

Nachdem er nach seinem Verrat die Soul Souciety verlassen hat und in die Hueco Mundo, die Hollow-Welt, geflüchtet ist, wird er dort der unangefochtene Anführer der Arrancars. Er ist anscheinend so mächtig und Angst einflößend, dass keiner der Arrancars oder Espadas es auch nur annähernd wagt Aizen zu widersprechen.
Sein Zanpakuto Kyōka Suigetsu besitzt die einzigartige Fähigkeit der totalen und absoluten Hypnose, die er auf alle Shinigamis der Soul Souciety angewendet hatte.
