Starship Operators (2005)

In “Starship Operators”, Shinon and her fellow cadets at the military academy look forward to a promising future as their class – the 73rd since the academy’s founding – is about to graduate. As the icing on the cake, they are allowed to complete their last training flight on the remarkable guard ship Amaterasu, which is making its first test flight on its way back to the planet Kibi, the cadets’ home planet.

But joy and excitement give way to horror when the ship reaches the planet, for war has been declared on it by the Henrietta Alliance of Planetary Nations, and the surrender was made without a fight. The crew of the ship abide by their orders and abandon the ship. But not the young cadets, who refuse to surrender so easily and decide to acquire the ship – but by what means? When two Galaxy Network TV station employees offer Shinon and her companions to finance this venture and, in contrast, to be allowed to film on board, the cadets accept the offer.

But the rebellious everyday life is marked by escape and the fight for survival because combat ships from the subjugated planet are already on their trail, and the first battleship is also not long in coming. Shinon, as the new senior officer, has to use all her strategic skills to ensure that her young crew can survive. On the way to a safe area, however, the crew of the Amaterasu also has to deal with the sometimes idiosyncratic demands of the TV station. Soon, the suspicion arises that the whole thing is a set-up …

In »Starship Operators« sehen Shinon und ihre Mitkadetten an der Militärakademie einer vielversprechenden Zukunft entgegen, denn schließlich steht ihr Jahrgang – der 73. seit Bestehen der Akademie – kurz vorm Abschluss. Als Sahnehäubchen dürfen sie ihren letzten Trainingsflug auf dem beachtlichen Wachschiff Amaterasu absolvieren, das auf Rückweg zum Planeten Kibi, dem Heimatplaneten der Kadetten, seinen ersten Testflug beginnt.

Doch Freude und Aufregung weichen Entsetzen, als das Schiff den Planeten erreicht, denn der wurde durch das Bündnis der benachbarten Planeten von Henrietta angegriffen und zur Kapitulation gezwungen. Die Besatzung des Schiffes hält sich an ihre Befehle und verlässt das Schiff. Nicht jedoch die jungen Kadetten, die sich nicht so leicht ergeben wollen und beschließen, das Schiff zu erwerben – doch mit welchen Mitteln? Als zwei Mitarbeiter des TV-Senders Galaxy Network Shinon und ihren Gefährten anbieten, dieses Vorhaben zu finanzieren, und im Gegensatz dazu auf Bord filmen zu dürfen, nehmen die Kadetten das Angebot an.

Doch der rebellische Alltag wird von Flucht und Überlebenskampf geprägt, denn Kampfschiffe des unterworfenen Planeten sind ihnen bereits auf der Spur, auch das erste Schlachtschiff lässt nicht lange auf sich warten. Shinon als neue leitende Offizierin muss all ihr strategisches Geschick aufbringen, damit ihr junge Crew überleben kann. Auf dem Weg in ein sicheres Gebiet muss sich die Besatzung der Amaterasu allerdings auch mit den zuweilen eigenwilligen Forderungen des TV-Senders herumschlagen; schon bald entsteht der Verdacht, dass die ganze Sache ein abgekartetes Spiel ist …
